Bug Fix!

The S/FILSYN REXX script system is being continuously corrected and expanded. The latest set of REXX system files my be downloaded here. To use these files you must have a version of S/FILSYN that had them initially. If you are still using the EBL system, you will need to purchase an upgrade to begin using them.

NOTE: All users of COMB and ECM post-processors:

Old versions of these two programs will not operate from the files generated by the PASSIVE module which has the coupled triplet or quad features. Anyone who has rescently upgraded S/FILSYN and has these post-processors should contact ALK Engineering for a new version.

REXX script system replaces EBL for Windows NT

The EBL script system did not operate properly under Windows NT and has been replaced by the REXX system from Quercus Systems . All of the EBL script files are now replaced making S/FILSYN fully functional and automated under Windows NT. This upgrade is also available to allow older versions of S/FILSYN to run under Windows NT. A hardware key exchange will probably be need too though.

Older "PC" version of S/FILSYN made use of EBL script programs. This software is no longer available however.

LIST OF NEW FEATURES IN S/FILSYN

This list contains most of the additions to S/FILSYN during the past years. Please refer to these new capabilities to decide if you should purchase an update. Only brief information is contained in this document. Please call us, if you desire more detailed information.

The S/FILSYN upgrade comes with a completely new spiral-bound users guide and will operate with your existing security key under DOS, Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.

To operate S/FILSYN under Windows "NT", your present hardware security key must be exchanged for a new one at a small additional charge. A software driver will be supplied for use with the new key.

Release 3.30 March 1999

• Coupled triplet sections added.
• All of the unnecessary connecting "spaces" have been removed from the schematic drawings. A utility is also provided to place the screen in the 50 line text mode. This reduces the need for the WAS or SR reverse scrolling utility. Except for extremely large networks, the entire schematic drawing will now fit on the screen at once.

All EBL script programs are replaced by REXX system files to allow operation under Windows "NT". The S/FILSYN program itself is unchanged.

Release 3.20 April 1994

• The program is now able to generate wave-digital filters of both the ladder and lattice variety.
• We can generate differential allpass filters for the implementation of digital filters.
• In the ACTIVE-RC segment, we can replace resistors by preferred value ones in the transfer files.
• Also in the ACTIVE-RC segment, the transfer file writing has been re- arranged to simplify matters.
• In the PASSIVE segment, we have introduced three-element branches, that are handled by all commands and introduced a new command to convert to and from three-element branches.
• Also in the PASSIVE segment, we can now introduce loss equalizer sections and these are handled properly by all relevant commands. We can generate transfer files to SuperStar, PCFILT and Matlab programs, in addition to all previous options.
• In the PLACER program, if the computer-selected poles are inadequate, the program automatically increases their number and reruns the optimization.
• Documentation files now also contain a parts list.
• We have upgraded many of the batch files and added a large number of them. Now we have over 120 such script files available. All the menu programs have also been upgraded to handle these new and modified files.
• The COMBLINE postprocessor can convert equal-diameter round rod design to a rectangular rod design with all rods having the same thickness.
• The SR backscroll utility was replaced by a move powerful one.
• We have a brand new manual.

Version 2.61 December 1991

• The PLACER segment now handles transmission zeros of any specified multiplicity multiple loss poles).
• In the ACTIVE segment, a new realization using capacitors and transconductance amplifiers is available (useful for high-frequency active filters especially in integrated form); circuit file for SPICE can also be written.
• Switched-capacitor circuit files were modified to work with SCASY Version 2.0.
• New FlR-window: Four-term sampled Kaiser.
• EBL Plus template files now work under MS-DOS 5.0.

Version 2.51 May 1991

• FIR filters can now be designed for a shaped passband response. The requirements are entered from a file as tabulated frequency-loss pairs.
• In the ACTIVE segment, the new command ASCII permits us to write the filter design data and the transfer functions of the biquadratic sections to a formatted file for documentation or processing by another program.
• In the delay equalizer segment, an entry of -1 for the iteration number bypasses the iterative procedure and allows to enter delay equalizer poles directly. The zeros are placed to the symmetric positions. The batch file DELAYLIN uses this option to convert the poles of a linear-phase lowpass or bandpass to a delay line.
• The keyword MAX at the FREQ prompt selects the maximum number of analysis frequencies within the given lower and upper limit.
• The new command DOS in the SMAIN and all analysis segments allows temporary access to DOS from within S/FILSYN.

Version 2.31 December 1990

• In the DIGITAL segment, the commands DIR and LAT were added to calculate the DIRect and Gray-Markel LATtice-forms.

Version 2.21 September l990

• In SMAIN, the new command DATA is available to write transfer function data (poles, zeros, constant) to a file. The pole/zero-data may be processed by another program (i.e. the new optimizing preprocessor OPT) or printed for documentation.
• The new command TIME in SMAIN allows the calculation of the impulse and step response from the transfer function by an inverse Laplace transform. The time response may be written to a file.
• The NORTON transformation in the PASSIVE segment now works also if the two branches for the transformation are not next to each other. Branch interchange is no longer needed to prepare for the transformation.
• After the cascade synthesis in the ACTIVE segment, the selected sequence is displayed after the transfer function coefficients of the blocks because the sequence of transmission zeros is now automatically selected for optimum dynamic range.

Version 2.11 March l990

• A new menu-driven front end allows direct access to all batch files and to nearly all features of the S/FILSYN program itself.
• The new template ESTIMATE estimates the filter degree necessary to meet specifications for Butterworth, Chebyshev and elliptic filters.
• New batch file RESTART.
• The functional input format has been modified to accept other than just normalized frequencies. Now frequencies can be entered in engineering units, rad/sec or normalized.

Version 1.51 March 1989

• The new command UNDO is available in all analysis segments for one level of protection against destructive commands. The STO command stores an additional specified stage of the design.
• Several additional and extended commands are available in the passive / microwave segment. Using these commands, any possible ladder structure can be reached from the computer-selected configuration.
• The specific command ECM was implemented for edge-coupled microwave filter design to avoid the need for a manually controlled iterative procedure.
• A circuit file (netlist) for passive LC filters can be automatically written for the SPICE program.
• New batch files have been added and older ones were upgraded to make them easier to use and to provide additional capabilities.
• The ECM (Edge-Coupled Microwave) and COMBLINE postprocessors were upgraded substantially. COMBLINE now has an optimizer built in to obtain an equal-ripple passband behavior after conversion. Both postprocessors can now handle either English or metric units.
• In the active-RC segment, a cascade synthesis is provided that is automatically optimized for dynamic range.
• When designing switched-capacitor filters, transfer data files can be written for the SWITCAP analysis program from Columbia University.
• The program PRN2FILE is available in place of AUDIT to make it simpler to record any part(s) of a session to a disk file.
• In the IIR digital segment, the output of the coefficients was converted from octal to hexadecimal and the print and display functions were simplified.
• The DIGITAL cascade design yields a dynamically optimized pairing and ordering of factors as in ACTIVE.
• In the FIR segment, the maximum filter length was increased to 512. Six more window functions were added and the factoring procedure has been replaced by a more accurate and rugged one.

Other changes and additions

• Maximum number of frequency and time points for analysis increased from 201 to 501.
• Sloping passband for bandpass filters with increasing or decreasing passband loss.
• Complex transmission zeros allowed for cascade active filters.
• SBP command for the transformation of linear phase lowpass to linear phase bandpass filters with flexible selection of transmission zeros. Useful design procedure for relative bandwidths up to about 40%.
• PREF command replaces all capacitors in the circuit by their nearest standard value.
• RES command calculates resonant frequency of adjacent inductor and capacitor.
• SPRD command determines the range of element values in the circuit.
• DISP command in all analysis segments allows display of the specification data.
• Context-sensitive help system. Detailed explanation for data entry is available in a screen window at each prompt.
• New batch files for the design of band-reject filters (BRF), Butterworth filters (BUTTER), Chebyshev filters (CHEBY), Gauss filters (GAUSS), filters using Legendre polynomials (LEGENDRE), delay lines (DELAYLIN), lowpass and bandpass filters with specified ringing of the impulse or step response and given minimum loss in the stopband (PULSE, STEP), bandpass filters with rising or falling slope in the passband (SLOPE)
